Winter on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

With the polar blast over the last couple of days, we have soft snow all over the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Hiking in snowbound terrain requires planning, the right equipment and an ability to distinguish variations in conditions.   Snow conditions can vary depending on time of day, temperature and season. On parts of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing you are exposed to the wind from all directions and it is important to remember in the winter we do not have the same daylight as we do in summer. Hiking on snow can be slow going, occasionally you can post hole (when a hiker can sink lower than shin depth whilst walking on soft snow) some times up to your waist.

If you are not experienced in hiking in alpine conditions for your safety we recommend you arrange a guided tour in winter.
