Tongariro Alpine Crossing - two new attractions

Tongariro Alpine Crossing Opening for Labour Weekend

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track will re-open this Friday in time for Labour weekend visitors. The two new attractions on the crossing are the steaming vents of the Te Maari Crater and hikers will be able to view the damage caused to the Ketetahi Hutt by the August 6th eruption.

The track has been repaired, but in places it may be a little soft and rocky. Visitors still need to consider winter conditions with snow cover and avalanche conditions remaining on many high parts of the track. You will need to be well prepared with warm clothing, crampons and ice axe. Tongariro Track Transport is scheduled this weekend – weather permitting. For your safety please check with the Department of Conservation before venturing into the Tongariro National Park regarding the track conditions and weather.
